get naked or leave

Thu Jul 17, 2008, 10:00 AM
My freshman year of college, I was unable to take any studio art classes and missed creating art. My friend Lylee was a sophomore, intending to transfer to another school and needed to build her portfolio. Our friend Zach just liked art. Thus, we created our own Art Night. We had the delightful saying, Get Naked or Leave. One of us would model in our underwear while the others would draw. These are some of the best memories of my first year of college (although, granted, I do have many wonderful memories of college). Zach was one of those sweet sort of guys who blushed easily—so, of course, Miss Lylee and I loved say moderately inappropriate things while we posed, because, well, we thought it was funny.

College was wonderful for me because despite my height and insecurities, I finally started to come into own and feel comfortable and confident being absurdly tall or “beautifully tall” as I was called for the first time.

My second year of school, I decided I would take up part time work as a life drawing model. Because $14 an hour, was pretty good. Of course the concept of being naked in front of my peers was a little daunting. However, after the first class I was sold. It was so comfortable; luckily I had several friends in the class that made jokes and were relaxed. I realized that it was simply a beautiful artistic situation. Life modeling has no sexual connotation. Modeling for life drawing was being a form for fellow students to study.

I found that nude modeling also built my confidence tremendously. Unlike the generally unattainable perfect of high fashion or glamour models, life modeling is about the appreciation of the human body in essentially any form. I felt content with my height, my easily bruised legs, my small breasts and narrow hips. I continued to model for another three semesters, until I left to study abroad. Upon my return, I had to take life drawing classes (so obviously I couldn’t model at the same time).

I had always found the female form gorgeous. The male from has its beauty as well, but I personally am more drawn to the aesthetic of the female body.

Art and nudity is a strange thing. It is impossible to define a concrete distinction between art and pornography. Therefore, I am not going to attempt creating such a definition, even on my own terms. Nor will I waste my time trying to argue my view to someone as conservative as to believe that all nudity is pornography. In the same way that I know I will not change their mind, they will not change mine. However, I do find it disheartening to live in a society that creates such a negative stigma on nudity. The nude human form has been depicted since the discovery of artistic forms. I simply don’t understand a need to conceal or scandalize it. If a particular form of art is not pleasing to you (or if you don’t consider it art) than don’t waste your energy with it. Simple.

The nude form is everywhere. Should the Louvre institute an 18 or older section dedicated to all images with nudity—since such images and sculpture is obviously inappropriate for those aged 17 and younger? What about architecture and public sculpture? Should we remove the genitals of all nude sculpture within public view (you know, like Ken dolls)? And breasts---well, that is another tangent completely.

I guess the moral of my story is that I love the human form, in its ideal and flawed forms. I think the body is beautiful in its perfections and imperfections—it is incredible how one basic form can be mechanical, sensual, strong, awkward, idyllic or fragile.

Ultimately, there is a choice—get naked or leave.

I chose to get naked.

How come you use $ and not £ if you are in England?

Did you go USA for college? I am 20 in the UK and i want to be a model for life drawing.

Do you know how to get into all that? I just want to do it for a one off. Like donating blood and sperm. It's what i said i would do for my new years resolutions. I need to get doing them soon.

Oh--yea, I am American. I have only been in the UK for a little over a year. I went to college in Minnesota.

I don't know how it works here. For me, I was part of the art department and they just had signs up advertising a need for models. Most univeristies need them though, so I would just check local listings with the school, perhaps?

It is a bizzarely liberating expierence. I reccomend it. And money is always nice too.

Thank you for sharing a slice of your life's experience and views with us - always good to know I wasn't the only "gentle giant" with issues about being head and shoulders above the rest of the class (although I suspect that a woman would be alot more self conscious about it - double standard and all ^^;).

I know the Roman Church back in the days of heavy influence and power started to "deface" nude sculptures by breaking off their private bits and replacing it with sculpted fig leaves (an insult to both the muse and the artist if you ask me but, that is just my opinion).

Hell the Sistene Chapell had been repainted so that the figures had clothes on (Michaell Angelo was sadistic enough to use some of the heads of the church as his models - he even painted those in Hell whom he thought deserved to be there. Got to LOVE an artist with a dark sense of humour).

I must send good karma thoughts out to Lylee and Zach for getting you comfortable in your skin. :)

Well you said it in a nut shell. I often wonder if this zealous labeling of nudity as pornography also feeds into the problems of eating disorders, people wanting plastic surgery for the stupidest of thing etc. I always find that there is an element of hypocracy to prudery or else some obsessive need to control. Either way it makes for a very unhealthy situation. Good for you that you are comfortable in your own skin and can appreciate the human form. One of the first models I drew used life modeling to cure anorexia.

Thanks for sharing that - very well expressed and beautiful thoughts. I'm real glad that nude modeling has had a positive impact on your life, as I hope that's the case with every model who gives it a try. And I wholly agree with you about art and nudity.

That art night idea is pretty good.

And it makes me feel better to hear your story of finding figure modeling. I went through something similar. (I'm also an Amazon height)

People do NOT know how much work it is to sit motionless for 40 minutes.

That was a really fun read =D

Yeah.. life modeling is not porn-like. It's an artform. I learn drawing by self-taught. Every single thing i learn in drawing is self-taught since i never get the chance to go to any art schools. So, human models from magazines, photographs, & observing really help me a lot in understanding body composition.
